HOME- the OLD Flat-Earth-Academy homepage... FEA is in the process of moving to WYWTK (See note at bottom)

Make your own "CT scanner"

Enough "bits" to let you attempt the challenge!

(Page's URL: ct-scans-kit.htm)

My earlier page presented a challenge. It would probably be best to read that first, if you haven't already seen it.

This page gives you some images which would let you make a start on beating the challenges.

Remember: We're trying to make a working model of a CT scanner.

There are several parts to that... and you could supply one of them, and let others supply the other parts. Have a go. If you get somewhere, get in touch (contact details below), and I'll publish what you've done here, or a link to it, if you prefer. This, by the way, is the way "real" science/ engineering is done.

I've taken a set of images which will "do" for developing the software that one path to success with this project would use.

They captured the following "challenge friendly" test target...

((image ct-oblique-close-20240304_1533.jpg goes here))

(I'm not going to spoon feed you here... you'll need to THINK about why things have been done the way they have! I WOULD be happy to answer questions. (Contact details below.))

That said, I hope you can understand why I think the following two are informative?...

((image ct-oblique-w-cam-20240304_1532-lores.jpg goes here)) ((image ct-overhead-20240304_1532.jpg goes here))

With a set-up like that, you are pretending that you can't look down from above to see what's on the white platter. You can only "take pictures" from the side... but you take a picture, rotate the platter, take a picture, rotate the platter... over and over until the platter has revolved 360 degrees.

The more photos, the higher the resolution of the final result.

Here's one done for you

Here's a set of photos done with the sort of set-up I am advocating.

((image ct-slices8.jpg goes here))

As I've said in several places, a zip of those 8 images is available, if you want to skip the first challenge.

One of the challenges was to "cut down" some raw images... if you think that will help. (From a set similar to that above))... i.e. we might need to cut the whole "scan" down to what's in the red band...

Whether we need to do this or not depends on how clever the next program is. Me? I'd cut them down and then process just the bands.

((image ct-slice-P1210694.jpgg goes here))

... i.e. something like...

((image ct-slice-just-P1210694.jpg goes here))

Eventually, we need a data file with numbers representing the RGB of pixels in the band. There are several ways to skin these cats. YOU'RE doing the challenge! YOU decide how you want to go about it. What would be best? What pre-requisites will your solution entail? (Deciding these things early is usually best.)

Go for it!

Let me know how you get on?

A few words from the sponsors...

If you found this of interest, please mention it in forums, give it a Facebook "like", or whatever. If you want more of this stuff, help!? There's not much point in me writing these things if no one feels they are of any use, is there? I'm not telepathic. Encouragement will be appreciated! Contact details below.

What's New at the Site Advanced search
Search tool (free) provided by FreeFind... whom I've used since 2002. Happy with it, obviously!

Unlike the clever Google search engine, this one merely looks for the words you type, so....
*    Spell them properly.
*    Don't bother with "How do I get rich?" That will merely return pages with "how", "do", "I"....

Please also note that I have three other sites, and that this search will not include them. They have their own search buttons.

My SheepdogSoftware.co.uk site, where you'll find my main homepage. It has links for other areas, such as education, programming, investing.

My SheepdogGuides.com site.

My site at Arunet.

What's up? Is this WYWTK.com or is it Flat-Earth-Academy.com?

It's both! Flat-Earth-Academy.com is something I started years ago. For a variety of reasons, I can't offer you httpS:// access there. (As you are not asked to input any information, that's moot, but it "worries" search engines.) So I'm moving to my new, all singing, and will do the httpS:// dance site, "WYWTK.com", and Flat-Earth-Academy is gradually acquiring pages there. (Well, HERE, as what you are reading is one of my "wywtk/fea" pages.)

Why "WYWTK"? It comes from "What You Want To Know".

How to email or write this page's editor, Tom Boyd. If you write, please cite page's URL: wywtk.com/ec/sci/bio/ct/chal/ct-scans-kit... or at least the last part of that!

Test for valid HTML Page has been tested for compliance with INDUSTRY (not MS-only) standards, using the free, publicly accessible validator at validator.w3.org. It passes in some important ways, but still needs work to fully meet HTML 5 expectations. (If your browser hides your history, you may have to put the page's URL into the validator by hand. Check what page the validator looked at before becoming alarmed by a "not found" or "wrong doctype".)

AND passes... Test for valid CSS

Why does this page cause a script to run? Because of the Google panels, and the code for the search button. Also, I have my web-traffic monitored for me by eXTReMe tracker. They offer a free tracker. If you want to try one, check out their site. Why do I mention the script? Be sure you know all you need to about spyware.
